I hope you’re enjoying the last couple weeks of Summer. We look forward to seeing many of you next month in Olympia, WA. We have a near final agenda available online. And as you’re planning travel, please fill out the carpool board from SeaTac airport, so not everyone will need to rent a car.

Regards,

Derek

NOAA and Congressional Staff Visit the Virginia CZMP and the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

This past Tuesday, the Chesapeake Bay NERR-Virginia and the Virginia CZM Program, with support from NERRA and CSO, hosted NOAA Deputy Administrator, Dr. Tim Petty, a few of his colleagues, and Congressional staff for a field visit at the Reserve.

The day started with a presentation from the CZM Program and Reserve about the work they do to support the blue economy, coastal protection, and resilience, how their respective efforts complement each other and how each program engages communities in the coastal zone. Taking advantage of the Reserve’s location at the Viriginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) at Gloucester Point, attendees had the chance to visit VIMS’ Aquaculture lab, where they learned about the economic benefits and cultural importance of Virginia’s shellfish industry and how the reserve and CZM program have helped to invigorate and support the sector. Finally, the day wrapped up, out on the waters of the York River, with a discussion about water quality monitoring and the efforts to restore eel grass beds in the area.

Many thanks to Ryan Green (VA CZMP Manager) and Willie Reay (CBNERR Director) for a hosting a wonderful and informative day down at Gloucester Point!

Seeking Your Expertise: NOAA’s Modeling Consolidation and Modernization Initiative

NOAA’s National Ocean Service (NOS) is embarking on a significant initiative to modernize and consolidate our coastal and ocean modeling systems. The goal is to transition toward an authoritative, nationwide, state-of-the-art modeling suite that is more efficient, resilient, and better integrated with NOAA’s broader Unified Forecast System (UFS). To facilitate this, NOAA has released a Request for Information (RFI) to gather community feedback on:

  • Technical Capabilities: Information on model readiness, including compatibility with high-performance computing (HPC) and cloud environments, as well as opportunities for integrating advanced methods like ML/AI.
  • Strategic Vision: Perspectives on long-term design, community governance, and workflows that will strengthen our operational forecasting capabilities.

Please find the link to the RFI here.

Funding Opportunity: Fiscal Year 2024 & 2025 Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities

The Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) grant program makes federal funds available to states, U.S. territories, federally recognized tribal governments, and local governments for hazard mitigation activities. It does so by recognizing the need to upgrade and modernize the nation’s infrastructure against the growing risks to communities and the need for natural hazard risk mitigation activities that promote resilience with respect to natural hazards. For this funding opportunity, the program prioritizes investment in infrastructure and construction projects that deliver immediate, measurable risk reduction to communities vulnerable to natural hazards. BRIC emphasizes the adoption and enforcement of modern building codes and limits capability- and capacity-building activities to those directly tied to infrastructure resilience, such as building code adoption and enforcement.
